Just Say No to Corporate Speak

Just Say No to Corporate Speak Scot Herrick  of  Cube Rules  recently commented on my blog about his distaste for corporate speak on resumes and that got me thinking about where much of this corporate speak originatesfrom job postings. So I took a quick tour of  Simply Hired, a job aggregate board, to review the different styles of job postings. The first excerpt is from a posting for an operations professional; the second is for a program manager professional. Which one do you think is easier to understand and which place do you think sounds like a more authentic place to work?    Responsibility to facilitate, develop and implement initiatives across the team that will result in a well organized, well structured execution of activities. Responsible for ensuring capability within a commercialization project to meet the customer demand fulfillment ramp plan in Manufacturing. Responsible for the delivery of robust and capable equipment, process and production lines to the Manufacturing Operations function. Ensure th at there are clear deliverables in all interaction with the SBUs.  Or  You will have experience as a Lead Program Manager managing other producers. Passion for and knowledge of games. The first requirement is to love video games. The second is to understand what makes a great video game. Strong cross-team communication skills.  You can talk to creatives (e.g. artists and game designers), technical people (e.g. programmers), and non-technical people (e.g. PR and Marketing) alike. Deal with ambiguity. There is no instruction manual on how to be a great PM. Exceptional organizational skills. Your never let anything fall through the cracks. You are clear, concise, and specific. When you participate in a meeting, you clarify, capture and follow up on all action items.I vote for the program manager job. Its time for hiring authorities to cut to the chase when writing job specs. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Write in plain English. You may just find that you are more successful at finding the right match for your open positions.

The Importance of an Executive Cover Letter

The Importance of an Executive Cover Letter Do you want to know a secret about resumes and cover letters? Employers sometimes put more emphasis on a cover letter than they do a resume, so not focusing on yours can significantly reduce your chances of landing a job. It’s easy to spend a lot of time crafting your resume and not focus on the other important aspects of a job application. An executive resume cover letter gives an HR manager a glimpse of who the person really is behind a resume, so it deserves some time and attention. Another good reason for a cover letter is that even though you hear that many recruiters don’t read them, there are also many recruiters that WON’T read your resume without a cover letter. Here are some other reasons why your cover letter is important. Cover Letters Make You Stand Out Standing out is difficult to do when you think about the hundreds of resumes an HR manager has to sift through for any given job post. Your cover letter gives you the chance to fill in any blanks left in your resume, such as employment gaps, transitions, achievements or anything else. Instead of being a supplement to your resume, your cover letter should be an extension of it to tell your complete career story to your potential employer. Cover Letters Show Your True Self When writing cover letters for resumes, you have the opportunity to show your personality. Companies want to hire someone with the right skills and experience, but also someone who will fit culturally. Writing in a natural tone will show your true self and help an employer decide if you would be a good fit with the team. If it doesn’t seem like you would fit in well, then you’ll save time by not going to an interview or getting hired only to find out you simply don’t get along with your co-workers. Sell Yourself With Your Cover Letter Finally, your executive resume cover letter gives you the chance to sell yourself. You have a blank page to say whatever you want to about yourself, so don’t hold anything back. Let the employer know what you can offer them, how you’re best suited for the position you’re applying for and what your short-term and long-term goals are. Keep it concise, but get your point across clearly with the goal of making the HR manager impressed enough to want to meet you in person. How NOT to Tell Your Boss Youre Pregnant

How elend to Tell Your Boss Youre Pregnant Congrats, youre going to have a babyYoure probably over the moon about your upcoming arrival and already daydreaming about baby names and nursery decor. But if youre like the many moms-to-be Icoach, youre also a little nervous about the road ahead, and what it means for your career.Youre probably wondering how your pregnancy will be perceived by your coworkers. Whether youre the first pregnant woman in the office, or the tenth, it can be tricky to navigate telling your employer that youre expecting.Your first conversation with your anfhrer about your pregnancy and maternity leave is an important opportunity to set the tone for how motherhood will impact your career.Set yourself up for success in this initial conversation by avoiding these six pitfalls.1. Framing yourpregnancyas bad news or a problemSometimes we mistakenly think that motherhood will make us appear less focused professionally, but the opposite is true. Arecent studyeven found that mothers of at least two children are, on average mora productive than mothers of only one child, and mothers in general are more productive than childless women. So becoming a mom can make you even more productive than you ever thought possible because you value your time away from home more than ever before.Dont apologize for being pregnant or see your news as an inconvenience for others.2. By waiting so long its really obvious (i.e. that bump is BIG)This is just awkward for everyone involved so do yourself a favor and tell your boss before your bump is a basketball. If you feel like youre majorly showing before youre in the second trimester and youre not ready to tell your boss, then it can be helpful to wear loose maternity clothing to give you some extra time. Plus its comfy.3. In a group setting, such as when mentioning that you cant have a glass of wineTell your boss in private, I repeat, tell your boss in private. The conversation will go more smoothly, I promise.4. Throu gh a co-workerIf you want your boss to respect you, then you need to respect your boss. She needs to be the first to know that youre expecting so that she can plan and be prepared for your maternity leave. While you might be wanting to tell your office friends that youre expecting, hold off until youve talked to your boss.5. By talking about how you plan to quit after you return from maternity leaveAs Sheryl Sandberg says, dont leave before you leave. Even if you think you want to leave the workforce after your baby is born, its impossible to know how youll feel until your child actually arrives. Give yourself space and permission to make this big decision after your baby is born, and you get a chance to adjust to the demands of motherhood. You never know, you might welcome the break of going back to work, as youll be able to drink your coffee in peace. 6. In the midst of an especially stressful time for your boss/company, in the middle of a negative performance review, or alongside bad newsYou cant completely orchestrate the perfect timing to tell your boss that youre expecting, but you can try to schedule the conversation during a non stressful time. So if the quarter is about to close and everyone is rushing to meet their numbers, maybe wait until after that final push.Need tips for navigating maternity leave?
